President Trump comments on Alex Preti shooting incident
President Donald Trump said people cannot “walk in with guns” after the shooting death of ICU nurse Alex Preti.
Former Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw can’t contain his feelings for President Donald Trump, calling him a fascist and saying he needs to be removed from the White House.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Jan. 28, the two-time national champion coach accused the administration of creating an environment where law and justice no longer apply. Her remarks came four days after ICE agents shot and killed Alex Preti in Minneapolis.
Preti was trying to protect a woman who was being assaulted by an ICE officer. The agents knocked the veteran nurse to the ground, punched her, took her licensed gun, and shot her multiple times.
“We no longer believe in the rule of law or the principle that no one is above the law, because under this administration we have found the opposite to be true,” McGraw wrote. “Justice is no longer blind. Justice is bought with money and protected with power.”
“We need real change,” she continued. “…What we need is a reckoning in Washington. Until we get rid of the fascist in the White House, we will continue to see our democracy crumble.”
The Hall of Famer isn’t afraid to speak his mind and has been outspoken on social justice issues for years. In 2019, a year before she retired, McGraw said she stopped hiring male assistants because she wanted to give more opportunities to women. Before a game in December 2014, Notre Dame’s team wore T-shirts that read “I Can’t Breathe,” a reference to Eric Garner’s last words before he died in a police chokehold.
In his post, McGraw linked Preti’s death to the lack of accountability in previous extrajudicial killings.
“Have you ever wondered if things would have been different if Trayvon Martin’s killer had gone to prison, or if Breonna Taylor’s killer had been convicted of murder?” McGraw wrote. “Both incidents sparked nationwide protests. But did anything really change? If accountability had been fulfilled sooner, would George Floyd still be alive? If Renee Goode’s killer had been sitting in prison awaiting murder trial, would Alex Preti have been shot and killed so recklessly?”
“Once again, we protest,” McGraw said. “I’ll ask you the same question again. Has anything changed?”
McGraw compiled an 848-252 record in 33 seasons at Notre Dame. He retired in 2020 and currently works as a television analyst.
