More than 200,000 power banks sold on Amazon are being recalled after more than a dozen fires and injuries were reported related to defective batteries, federal officials said.
The INIU 10,000mAh portable power bank is subject to an ongoing recall, according to a news release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Officials said about 210,000 power banks are affected by the recall.
Batteries in power banks can overheat and catch fire, posing a risk of fire or burns to consumers, the CPSC said. The potential fire hazard has already affected customers across the country.
Federal officials said the INIU has received 15 reports of power banks overheating and 11 reports of fires resulting in minor burns. In addition, the fire caused by the battery caused approximately $400,000 in property damage.
Here’s what you need to know:
Where were the recalled mobile batteries sold?
According to the CPSC, the power bank was sold on Amazon from August 2021 to April 2022. The serial numbers of the recalled portable mobile batteries are 000G21, 000H21, 000I21, and 000L21.
What should I do if I have a recalled mobile battery?
Officials said owners of recalled mobile batteries should immediately stop using them, visit INIU’s recall page to find their product’s serial number and register for a full refund.
Additionally, authorities are advising customers not to throw away power bank batteries in trash bins as this may pose a fire hazard. Instead, people should contact their local authority Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection center. CPSC says this collection center can accept recalled power banks for safe disposal.
