Government shutdown continues, Senate votes fail
The government remains closed over the weekend. The two Democrats and independents voted to end the closure, but a 54-44 vote shortened Republicans.
WASHINGTON – A new poll shows Americans are more likely to blame President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans for shutting down the federal government than Congressional Democrats.
A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted from October 1 to October 3 of 2,441 adults found that 39% of respondents consider Trump and Congress Republicans the most responsible for the closure. 30% of respondents criticize Democrats more, while 31% criticize both equally.
The poll found 52% of respondents disapproved of how Trump is handling the shutdown. 52% are also unhappy with the way Congressional Republicans are dealing with it.
Meanwhile, 49% of respondents disapproved of how Congressional Democrats are handling the closure.
Polls have an error of either positive or negative 2.3 percentage points.
The closure is now in its second week as the parties stayed close to attacking funding contracts that reopen the government’s doors. Democrats are giving healthcare a focus on their demands and urge Republicans to expand their affordable care law subsidies.
40% of respondents believe that Congressional Democrats are not worth shutting down, while 28% believe it is worth it. Also, 45% of respondents believe that Congressional Republican positions are not worth shutting down, while 23% believe that it is worth it.
Approximately 750,000 federal employees, from national park workers to financial regulators, could get bored under the closure, withholding around $400 million in daily compensation, according to the Non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.
Other workers in government services, such as military members and law enforcement, that are deemed “essential” will continue to work, but will not be paid until a transaction is reached.
