i’m back. Welcome to the daily briefing. This morning’s breaking news is:

nicole farato here. Gloves on, “The Pit” is back today. From a woman shot and killed by immigration enforcement officers to America’s new (upside-down) food pyramid, we bring you the news you need to know on Thursday. Plus, meet the candidates for the U.S. Olympic Skating Team.

Official reactions to ICE shootings vary

A vigil was held Wednesday night for a 37-year-old Minnesota woman who was shot and killed by an immigration officer in Minneapolis. The woman, Renee Nicole Good, is at least the third person shot by federal agents involved in President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign. Millions of people witnessed the moment the agent shot and killed Good, whose family described her as a caring woman who “cared for others all her life.”

Officials have so far given conflicting accounts of the shooting. The Department of Homeland Security said its officers “fired defensive fire” after the woman tried to ram the officer with her car. President Trump claimed the ICE agents acted in self-defense and blamed the “radical left.”

Meanwhile, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said the woman was trying to run away from federal agents, not toward them. In a fiery speech Wednesday afternoon, Frey called on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents patrolling the area to “get out of Minneapolis.”

Goode’s death sparked outrage across the country and sparked new protests across the country.

More news you need to know right now

  • What happened in the Marinella incident?: After more than two weeks of manhunt, the U.S. military on Wednesday seized a Venezuela-linked oil tanker escorted by a Russian submarine in the Atlantic Ocean on suspicion of violating U.S. sanctions, the Trump administration confirmed.
  • US to withdraw from 66 international organizations. The United States will withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The list also includes agreements and organizations on renewable energy, oceans, piracy, counter-terrorism and women’s empowerment.
  • Murder trial twist: Nick Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson, has stepped down from his high-profile murder case charging 32-year-old Nick Reiner with murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner. The sudden withdrawal delayed Reiner’s case just as it was about to begin.

Let’s take a look

meat is on top

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a new set of dietary guidelines on Wednesday, including a food pyramid that’s probably much different than the one you remember. The updated food pyramid is almost a complete inversion of what it used to be, both visually and in content.

I want to talk to you about something.
