morning! Welcome to the daily briefing. This morning’s breaking news is:
nicole farato Here’s the news you need to know on Tuesday. We meet a coalition of residents who stand up against ICE for their neighbors and tell their stories of colon cancer recovery. Plus, bad luck for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
ICE Watch trains neighbors to monitor and record
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement monitoring group launches a signal chat at 5 a.m. most mornings to track arrests and raids in south Minneapolis for another day.
This is the area where Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed by ICE agents on January 7th. In recent weeks, people have been walking up and down Lake Street before work and on their lunch breaks, educating neighbors at grocery stores and bus stops about what their rights are if they are stopped by ICE, one of the organizers, Andrew Fahlstrom, 44, told USA TODAY. At school drop-offs and pick-ups, parents and neighbors carry whistles and are ready to blow when they see immigration officers. They take others to see doctors.
It is legal to monitor and film federal employees while on the job.
Trump administration officials refer to people who track ICE and warn neighbors as “domestic terrorists.” But as state officials clash with the Trump administration over Good’s killing, neighboring states continue their efforts. The states of Minnesota and Illinois on Monday sued Secretary of Landmark Kristi Noem for trying to curb the agency’s oppression.
Fahlstrom says they call themselves neighbors and have no intention of backing down.
More news you need to know right now
- US air strikes on Iran are “under consideration”. Protests in Iran, sparked by the country’s economic slump due to years of international sanctions, have left hundreds dead and drawn condemnation from human rights groups. President Trump is considering military options in a country where violence continues.
- “We’re screwed”: President Trump has warned of financial disaster for the United States if the Supreme Court rules that his sweeping tariffs on global imports are illegal.
- Has your cough subsided? December was particularly difficult, with record numbers of medical visits, but the number of influenza cases has so far been on the decline since January. But please be careful.
Let’s take a look
Was it Aaron Rodgers’ last NFL game?
On Monday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost 30-6 to the Houston Texans in the final game of the NFL Wild Card Round. The question that will remain throughout the offseason will be whether this was the last time Aaron Rodgers leaves a locker room as an NFL player. After the loss, Rodgers defended head coach Mike Tomlin’s departure. USA TODAY Sports ranked all eight remaining NFL teams based on playoff odds.
