Michigan students surprised and disappointed by Sherone Moore news
December 13, 2025: University of Michigan students and alumni react to details of the firing and arrest of University of Michigan football coach Sherone Moore.
After the highly publicized firing of its football coach and subsequent search for his replacement, Michigan State appears to have found who will lead the program next.
The Wolverines are finalizing a deal to bring longtime Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham to Ann Arbor to replace Sherone Moore, who was fired on Dec. 10 and then charged with burglary, stalking and trespassing on Dec. 12, the same day Whittingham abruptly announced his retirement from Utah State after 21 seasons at the helm.
The timing works out well for the University of Michigan, not only because it allows a proven coach to lead the program after Moore’s firing, but also because it allows the Wolverines to minimize potential damage through the transfer portal.
NCAA rules allow players on a team to enter their names into the transfer portal five days after a new coach is hired. If Michigan officially announces the recruitment on Friday, Dec. 26, Michigan players will be able to enter their names into the portal on Dec. 31. This comes just two days before the 15-day portal opens across the United States on January 2nd.
Early reports suggest Whittingham could also be in Orlando for the Citrus Bowl game between Michigan State and Texas, which kicks off 30 minutes before Utah and Nebraska play in the Las Vegas Bowl. It is unclear whether Whittingham will finish the season with the Utes or potentially get a head start with his new team.
Here’s how social media reacted to the news that Michigan State finalized a deal to hire Whittingham.
