Michigan State interim president Domenico Grasso sent a letter to the school’s students and faculty on Thursday, Dec. 11 regarding the ongoing investigation into former football coach Sherrone Moore.

This is the first comment from the university since announcing Moore’s termination on Wednesday, Dec. 10, but does not mention Moore’s detention and arrest that occurred later that day.

Moore was fired after a university investigation found “credible evidence” that he had “an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” Mr. Grasso said in his letter that Mr. Moore’s employment was immediately terminated upon presentation of the findings of the investigation on Dec. 10.

“This behavior by the University of Michigan will never be tolerated. None of it will be tolerated,” Grasso wrote. “I have been in close contact with the board and we are united in doing the right thing.

“This betrayal by Coach Moore is painful to many in our community, first and foremost to those directly involved in this situation,” he added.

“All the facts here need to be known,” Professor Grasso said, adding that the university’s investigation into Moore continues. He encouraged anyone with information related to the investigation to contact university officials.

There was no mention of possible criminal charges against Moore or the outcome of the investigation. The former Wolverines coach was taken into police custody on Dec. 10 after the Pittsfield Township Police Department was dispatched to a residence “investigating an alleged assault” on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 4:10 p.m. ET (about 30 minutes after Michigan State announced his termination).

Mr. Moore was arrested Wednesday night and booked into the Washtenaw County Jail, where he remained in custody as of Thursday, December 11th at 7:00 PM ET. No information regarding the charges was available.

Mr. Moore is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Friday, December 12th.
