Compare the Lions and Packers to your favorite Thanksgiving foods
Joe Rivera and Chris Bumbaka commentate on Thursday’s Thanksgiving game between the Lions and the Packers.
- Officials granted Packers coach Matt LaFleur a timeout despite a false start penalty on the play.
- The controversial decision nullified a penalty that would have forced Green Bay back from its 2-yard line.
- After a timeout, the Packers scored a touchdown to make it 17-7.
I have a feeling the referees may be generous to start this holiday season.
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur successfully called a timeout on his team facing a fourth-and-one from the Detroit 2-yard line before the two-minute warning. However, replays on the FOX broadcast showed that LaFleur began calling a timeout long after Green Bay right guard Anthony Belton started moving before the snap.
The referees threw a flag at Belton, but when LaFleur protested the delayed timeout, they huddled and argued. Officials ultimately granted the Packers a timeout, saving valuable penalty yards on that part of the field. LaFleur continued to attack down the field, and quarterback Jordan Love set up Romeo Doubes for a 3-yard score on the next play to make it 17-7 with 2:12 left in the second quarter.
“They took a break,” FOX play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt said.
The Lions scored in a two-minute drill to make it 17-14 at halftime.
