Martha Stewart is speaking out against President Donald Trump’s ongoing deportation campaign that has sparked protests in Minneapolis.

The celebrity chef revealed on social media on Monday that at the urging of his granddaughter, he decided to denounce both immigration and the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents against peaceful demonstrators demonstrating on the streets of Minnesota City.

Stewart, 84, wrote on Instagram on January 26th, along with a screenshot of the message, “Yesterday, my granddaughter Jude wrote me a note and I kept it in mind as I posted the above.”

“I don’t know if it’s okay not to speak up right now,” Jude wrote in a message to Stewart, according to the photo.

In response, the cookbook author wrote on Instagram: “She’s 14 years old and is sensitive to what’s going on in this country, as we all should be.

“I am disappointed and sad every day that I cannot show compassion to those in need,” she continued. “Immigrants, most of whom are immigrants or their descendants, are being told that they cannot express their grievances in peaceful demonstrations and may be attacked and even killed by federal forces.”

Stewart, a well-known television food and lifestyle expert, has previously spoken out about Trump and even worked with him on an offshoot of Trump’s reality show, “The Apprentice.”

“Things must and must change quickly and peacefully,” she concluded.

Tensions over ICE enforcement have been boiling over in Minneapolis in recent days, exacerbated by two high-profile shootings. Earlier this month, Immigration and Customs Enforcement shot and killed American citizen Renee Nicole Good. Good has been protesting ICE agents who have raided the Twin Cities in recent weeks.

Protester Alex Preti was also killed by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis this month. In both cases, the Trump administration has characterized the shootings as acts of self-defense, but local authorities have pointed to video evidence that appears to show Preti was not brandishing a weapon.
