Deadly crash puts spotlight on cannabis and driving

17-year-old Luke Lessecker crashed his Chevrolet Silverado into the minivan of a Georgia family celebrating the holidays in Texas, essentially killing eight people. A devastating head-on collision on December 26, 2023 left six family members dead. The seventh family member, a doting father who was left paralyzed, was the only survivor in the minivan. And then there’s Resecker himself, who tested positive for THC and was recently sentenced to 65 years in prison. USA TODAY spoke exclusively with Resecker’s attorney and two prosecutors. Who litigated the judgment? One of the harshest penalties ever for driving under the influence of marijuana.

Pentagon investigating Sen. Mark Kelly

The Pentagon announced Monday that it is investigating Sen. Mark Kelly for “allegations of serious misconduct” after the Arizona Democrat called on the U.S. military to refuse illegal orders. Kelly was among a group of six Democratic lawmakers who released a video telling soldiers they have the right to disobey orders they believe are illegal. “I will not let the bullies silence me,” Kelly said.

President Trump’s Obamacare subsidy plan is on hold

The White House is delaying a proposal to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies that expire at the end of December due to resistance from Republicans, according to multiple media reports. Obamacare premiums are expected to rise at the end of the year if subsidies are not extended, leaving Republicans in Congress in a dilemma as they try to avoid major political liability ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The policy battle was at the heart of the record government shutdown that ended earlier this month.

In a lawsuit against the bot’s creator, OpenAI, his family says they never expected ChatGPT to go from confidant to enabler so quickly. They accuse ChatGPT of giving Joshua endless information on suicide methods and justifying his dark thoughts.

Viola Fletcher, one of the last survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre, dies

Viola Fletcher died on November 24 at the age of 111, according to the mayor of Tulsa. Fletcher was born in Comanche, Oklahoma, just south of Oklahoma City, and moved with his family to Tulsa as a child, where he witnessed the brutality of the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921.
