‘Donald J. Trump Presidential Boulevard’ officially unveiled in Florida
A four-mile road leading to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, is now named after the president.
Details are emerging about the armed man who allegedly breached the secure perimeter of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property and was shot and killed by law enforcement officers on Sunday, February 22nd.
The man was seen near the north gate of the property around 1:30 a.m. and stopped by two Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputies and Secret Service agents. The president was in Washington, not at the Florida club, during the incident.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw said the man had a shotgun and a fuel can, and authorities ordered him to drop the items. The man put down the gas can, but the sheriff said he “raised his shotgun to a firing position,” and authorities responded by firing their gun at the man.
As more information is released, here’s what we know about the man who was shot.
Have authorities identified the man?
Authorities have not confirmed the individual’s name, but told reporters at a Feb. 22 press conference that he is a white male in his early 20s.
Bradshaw told reporters that law enforcement officials were not aware of the man before the incident.
The sheriff also said he could not confirm how many shots were fired because the incident is still an active investigation led by the FBI. No law enforcement personnel were injured in the shooting, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
What else are the authorities saying?
Authorities asked people living in the area to check security footage around their homes and report anything suspicious to the FBI or local authorities.
President Trump has not publicly addressed the incident. White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said in a social media post that the Secret Service “acted swiftly and decisively to neutralize the deranged individual.”
She also blamed Democrats for the ongoing partial government shutdown, during which the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Secret Service, is facing a funding shortfall.
