End the week with Friday news:
Trap of the Oval Office or space for common ground?
The stakes for Friday’s White House meeting between President Donald Trump and New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani could not be higher.
- Similar but different: Trump, a 79-year-old Republican, and Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, are polar opposites in style and substance. But both are New Yorkers with passionate followings and ran winning campaigns on the theme of affordability.
President Trump accuses Democrats of being instigators
President Donald Trump has accused six Democratic members of Congress of “sedition punishable by the death penalty” after they made a video urging soldiers to resist illegal orders.
- Is it possible? Legal experts told USA TODAY that the president’s charges are likely to fail in court. And according to statutory law, sedition is punishable by a fine and up to 20 years in prison, not the death penalty. That hasn’t stopped many Trump supporters from calling for the death penalty.
More news you need to know right now
- The plane that caused the fatal UPS crash had “cracks” in its engine mounts, the NTSB said.
- Dick Cheney’s funeral felt like a vice presidential reunion and a sense of 2000s deja vu.
- Charlotte and federal officials disagree on whether the immigration crackdown is over.
- The CDC has changed language about vaccines and autism on its website.

Why has the unemployment rate increased?
The delayed jobs report showed that U.S. employers added 119,000 jobs in September, more than expected, but the unemployment rate edged up to 4.4% in September from 4.3% in August, the highest level in nearly four years. The report, originally scheduled to be released on October 3, will reflect what was happening before the shutdown began. The labor market may have changed since the data were collected.
‘Very treatable’ sepsis is often a death sentence for prisoners
Arrests for minor infractions, such as trespassing or missing a probation meeting, turn into death sentences when correctional facilities delay or deny inmates the medical care they need. Grieving families sue for millions of dollars in damages, often with taxpayers footing the bill. A USA TODAY investigation found that hundreds of these preventable deaths occur every year in prisons and jails across the country. Every person USA TODAY spoke to who lost someone to sepsis in a correctional facility was left in a state of disbelief.

Saying goodbye to Thanksgiving gravy?
Even if you put something on your plate, don’t eat it all. Wear a new style. Denial in seconds: As GLP-1 becomes more mainstream, it’s likely to change how everyone looks and eats at the Thanksgiving table this year. And we can easily get upset or offended if someone doesn’t have the day’s special. Here’s how to recreate delicious moments from the Ozempic era.
Photo of the day: Praise the Stars
Friends, family and colleagues of the late “Black Panther” actor Chadwick Boseman gathered Thursday to honor him with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Boseman passed away at the age of 43 on August 29, 2020, after a private four-year battle with colon cancer. It was a touching moment.
