Macy’s, the historic department store chain, continues to shrink its store footprint across the United States, and Macy’s plans to close 14 stores.
“Macy’s continues to execute on a bold new chapter strategy, making targeted adjustments to our store footprint to better serve our customers and support long-term growth. These actions allow us to reinvest in our stores and digital capabilities moving forward,” the retailer said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY on Jan. 9.
The closures came as the company reported strong sales momentum through December 2025. In a memo shared by Macy’s CEO Tony Spring that same month, the company said its strategy was “producing measurable progress.”
“We have made meaningful progress and remain clear-eyed about our future efforts,” Spring said. “We are seeing customer response through strong performance in our business going forward, record Net Promoter Scores, and improved performance in our first three quarters.”
