Luka Doncic has stepped up to pay for the entire expected cost of restoring the destroyed mural depicting Kobe and Gigi Bryant in downtown Los Angeles.
The new Los Angeles Lakers security guard made a donation of $5,000 on Tuesday, covering the entire GoFundMe page goals created by artist Louis Palcino. He wants to restore a mural entitled “Mambas Forever” on 14th Avenue and Main Street.
“It’s always been important to give back to the community,” Doncic said after practicing at the Lakers training complex. “They gave me so much, so I just want to give it back.”
The Slovenian superstar joined the Lakers three months ago in a smash trade with the Dallas Mavericks.
He teamed up with LeBron James to lead the Lakers to the third seed in the Pacific Division title and Western Conference playoffs, but Los Angeles is on the brink of elimination when the Minnesota Timberwolves visited Game 5 with a 3-1 series lead.
Bryant spent his entire 20 years with the Lakers, winning five championships and becoming the highest scorer in franchise history. After Kobe and Gigi Bryant died in a helicopter collision in January 2020, hundreds of murals and public art projects have emerged around Southern California.
