Luigi Mangione, the man accused of fatally shooting United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is expected to appear in a Manhattan court on September 16th.

Mangion, 27, faces almost 12 charges in New York State Court, including first-degree murder to promote terrorism, as he allegedly shot and killed 50-year-old Thompson outside the Midtown Manhattan Hotel on December 4, 2024.

The killing caused several days of manhunt and a pour of vitriol on the health insurance industry. Dozens of supporters gathered both inside and outside the courtroom ahead of the preliminary hearing in February.

Mangion, who faces additional charges in Pennsylvania and federal courts, pleaded not guilty to the New York state charges in December.

Why is Luigi Mangion returning to court?

New York Supreme Court Judge Gregory Caro sets a state trial date and may begin and control many recent claims at the latest hearing, Business Insider reported. USA Today contacted prosecutors, Mangion’s lawyers and court officials to confirm the motion intended to be controlled by Karo.

Officials previously said that the state case is expected to go to trial before a federal case, but Mangion’s defense team argued in a June court that doing so would violate his rights. US District Judge Margaret Garnett said the federal trial for Mangion will not begin until 2026.

The defense team also urged Karo to dismiss “legally and virtually unfounded” terrorist charges against Mangion, and to use statements made by the prosecutors and prevent the use of evidence found at Mangion’s arrest.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tish said police found a 3D printed “ghost gun” similar to the weapons used in the shooting and a “handwritten document” that spoke to “his motivation and way of thinking.” Prosecutors argue in their court application that Mangion’s writing and methodological plan for attack justifies accusations of first-degree murder that promotes terrorism.

However, law enforcement failed to provide Mangion with Miranda’s warning, saying it “conducted a warrantless search” of his backpack, violated its constitutional rights and could not use evidence.

Mangion’s lawyers asked the judges for additional time to determine whether they would introduce psychiatric evidence as part of their defense, despite the August 25 deadline being given.
