The 27-year-old has been arrested for allegedly spraying graffiti in Hebrew on the western walls of Jerusalem, saying, “There’s a Holocaust in Gaza.”
Israeli police said the graffiti was sprayed near the Mugravi Gate on the western wall of the western wall. The gate is the only entrance for non-Muslim visitors to Temple Mount, the most sacred place of Judaism known to Muslims as Al Haram Al Sharif
The West Wall Heritage Foundation, an organization for preserving the Western Wall site, said that graffiti was discovered on the stones of the western wall in the south and described it as “a serious act that constitutes sacred sanctuary blasphemous to the Jews and harm.”
Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, the rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Land, condemned Graffiti, saying, “The holy land is not a place to express protest, even if they are – and when it was done in the most sacred place to the whole Jewish people.”
Israeli police said the suspect in custody was a “resident of Jerusalem” and never gave a detailed explanation. The area is located in East Jerusalem, which has been occupied by Israel since the war in 1967 and is home to numerous Palestinians.
Asked about the identity of the suspect, Israeli police told CNN “The core issue here is criminal activity that taints the holy land,” adding, “The Israeli police will hold criminals liable and liable, regardless of their religion, ethnicity or background.”
The suspect will be “bringed to court” on Monday for a hearing “where police require him to extend his custody,” police said.
Police said the suspect sprayed similar graffiti on the walls of a great synagogue in central Jerusalem.
