The legendary Italian automaker has confirmed to USA TODAY that it no longer has plans to produce battery electric vehicles by 2030.
Why don’t car thieves buy electric cars or plug-in hybrid cars?
Research shows that electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars are less likely to be stolen by car thieves. Let’s see why.
- Lamborghini is shifting its focus from fully electric cars to plug-in hybrids.
- The company cited slowing demand for battery electric vehicles in the luxury sports car market.
- The next-generation Urus, which will be released in 2029, will be a plug-in hybrid rather than a fully electric vehicle.
Lamborghini will abandon plans to develop a fully electric car by the end of 2010 in favor of hybrid vehicle development.
The Italian automaker, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, confirmed to USA TODAY that it will not follow through with its plan to produce battery electric vehicles by 2030 due to declining demand in the United States.
“The original roadmap envisaged introducing a fully electric Urus by the end of 2010, followed by a fourth fully electric model line,” the company said in a statement. “However, after extensive analysis and ongoing dialogue with dealers and customers, it has become clear that the pace of adoption of pure BEV vehicles has slowed significantly, particularly in the premium supersport segment where demand remains very limited.”
“Given these considerations, the product strategy has been refined,” Lamborghini’s statement continued. “We have already announced that the next-generation Urus, scheduled to be released in 2029, will be introduced as a plug-in hybrid. Similarly, the fourth model line will also debut as a plug-in hybrid.”
Why is Lamborghini shifting its focus to hybrids?
“From a technological point of view, Lamborghini is well prepared for full electrification, but the market within this segment is not yet ready for this transition,” Lamborghini said in a statement.
The company said: “Hybrid technology is currently the most appropriate solution for the brand, combining the emotional performance that defines Lamborghini’s DNA with meaningful CO2 reduction.”
Lamborghini said: “While our product roadmap is evolving, our commitment to decarbonization remains the same.”
