Brazilian police said on May 4 that they stopped a bomb attack planned for the Gaga Lady Gaga historic concert, which attracted more than 2 million people on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on May 3.

The Rio de Janeiro Civic Police, in partnership with the Department of Justice, said the plot was organized by groups that promoted radicalisation of teenagers, including self-harm and violent content as forms of social attribution.

According to Rio City Hall, 2.1 million people attended the Pop Icon concert.

“The suspect was recruiting participants, including minors, to carry out a coordinated attack using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails,” police said in a statement.

The Justice Department said recruiters have identified themselves as a member of Gaga’s global fan base known as “Little Monsters.”

The operation was based on a report from the province’s Cyber Operations Lab, following a chip-off from Rio State Police Intelligence. This has discovered digital cells that use coded language and symbolism of extremism to promote violent behavior among teenagers.

The man, known as the group’s leader, was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm in the southern province of Rio Grande do Sur and was detained by a teenager in Rio de Janeiro for storing child pornography.

Authorities have conducted more than 12 searches and symptoms warrants across the states of Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Soul and Sao Paulo.
