Kristin Chenoweth’s ‘Queen of Versailles’ Broadway show ends early

Kristin Chenoweth’s “The Queen of Versailles” is coming to an early end.

The Broadway show began its run in early November at New York City’s St. James Theater and will conclude its run on January 4th. The news marks an early end to the Chenoweth-led production about the luxurious, if not tragic, life of the Florida winner and billionaire wife Jackie Siegel.

Producers announced the news on Nov. 24 that the show, part of a new class of Broadway musicals alongside fan favorites such as “Wicked” and “Mamma Mia,” will end just days after the new year.

Based on the 2012 documentary of the same name, Broadway’s “The Queen of Versailles” features music and lyrics by industry legend Stephen Schwartz. Loosely based on the real life of Florida real estate mogul David Siegel (F. Murray Abraham) and his much younger wife Jackie (Chenoweth), the play aims to comment on the dangers of the relentless pursuit of wealth and materialism.

Despite Chenoweth’s undeniable star power, the film failed to catch on and received largely mixed reviews. The New York Times called the show “smart and brilliant,” while the Washington Post called it “both over-the-top and under-cooked.”

The difficulty for new shows to appeal to the masses could also be a factor, as the industry faces strong economic headwinds.

Chenowith has faced a tough press cycle in recent months following backlash for her comments mourning the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
