Justin Bateman is never afraid to speak his mind. If you follow her on social media, you know that she has recently criticized artificial intelligence (AI) in the media. But she’s not just posting about it, she’s taking action.

The filmmaker and actress is the founder of Credo23, a council that reviews films and series for a stamp warning viewers that no generative AI was used in their production. The nonprofit organization also plans to hold a film festival in Los Angeles from March 27th to 29th next year. Passes are available now.

“Over two years ago, it was clear to me that AI was going to be part of the end of our business,” she said on a recent Zoom call. “So there are a lot of factors, but it’s definitely the nail in the coffin.” Bateman is keen to buck the trend of other film festivals, such as the Toronto International Film Festival, in adopting AI.

“Generative AI works like a blender. If you want to spit out a movie, you put as many movies as you can find into the blender, and when you turn it on, it slices and dices it… It doesn’t work unless it takes in millions and millions and millions of pieces of information. That’s movies, hundreds, hundreds, hundreds of movies, 100 years of movies and TV series, even home movies and everything you have,” Bateman said in a post online. ” She considers it theft.

“It’s not creating anything new,” Bateman added. “It’s basically vomit.” It’s being used to create alternative backdrops for location shoots and to create AI objects that look like human actors.

Tilly Norwood, a new AI “actress” created by artificial intelligence production studio Particle6, is creating a buzz in the entertainment industry. With AI being the biggest flashpoint in Hollywood today, Norwood had little hope of staying under the radar. SAG-AFTRA, one of the largest entertainment unions, slammed the creation in a statement posted on Instagram, calling it an insult to the work of human performers.

The use of AI was one of the key bargaining issues at the center of the multi-month strike in 2023, which brought Hollywood to a standstill as several unions demanded better balances for regulating streaming and artificial intelligence.

Bateman sees the Credo23 film festival as a way to get through the AI uproar.

“I work every day to get as many sponsors as possible and give filmmakers as much money as possible to make more non-AI films,” she says.

Justin Bateman on AI movies: ‘My tech friends probably hate me’

Is she worried that her hot take will ruffle Hollywood feathers? not much.

“I work with filmmakers, actors, and executives who are actually making the movies,” she says. “I think my tech friends hate me, but I don’t really care.”

Jason Bateman recently opened up about his relationship with his sister Justin.

The “Zootopia 2” actor, 56, said in a new interview with Esquire that he “doesn’t really see” his sister, 59. A fellow actor, Old Man Bateman has appeared on Desperate Housewives and Californication and has been outspoken on several hot-button political issues.

However, Jason Bateman did not cite that as a reason for the distance, saying that the two, who grew up together in Hollywood, share a unique adult bond.

Justin Bateman has been an outspoken critic of the cancel culture that pervaded the Biden era.

“Trying to silence everyone who even wanted to discuss what was going on in our society had negative consequences,” she said in a November 2024 interview with USA TODAY. “And when you look at the election results, you can see for many people that it’s over. That’s why I say this election is over.”
