UN experts accused Israel of “withholding tax on access to safe drinking water from Palestinians in Gaza,” and said it would “use its cravings as a weapon to kill Palestinians.”
“The blockade and destruction of Israel’s private infrastructure have caused most of Gaza’s 2 million residents to evacuate and have no access to minimal vital drinking water,” a UN expert said in a statement. It said, “The movement led to deaths and widespread illnesses caused by water pollution, leading to a lack of hygiene and hygiene.”
Experts said since October 2023, when the war began, “Israel military operations have repeatedly targeted water facilities, wells, pipelines, desalination units and sewage systems, as 89% of Gaza’s water and sanitation infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed.” This has “have made more than 90% of the water unstable,” the statement said.
CNN contacted the Israeli government for comment.
The Israeli Defense Forces said it connected Israeli power lines to a desalination plant in Gaza over the weekend, supplying about 20,000 cubic meters of water per day.
UN experts are not UN staff and are not receiving pay for their jobs. According to the United Nations, they are independent human rights experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council.
