Bar Louis, the restaurant chain that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, joins a growing list of restaurants owned by Sun Holdings.
Dallas-based Sun Holdings, which acquired Uncle Julio’s in January 2025, announced on October 7 that it has also acquired Bar Louie, which operates 39 restaurants and cocktail bars across the United States.
Bar Louie, founded in 1991 in Chicago, Illinois, filed for bankruptcy in March. At the time, the company had 31 company-owned stores and 17 franchised stores in 19 states. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and was acquired by BLH TopCo as part of that process.
The restaurant chain’s bankruptcy, which had 130 locations in 2018, comes after a number of popular restaurant brands, including LaZoo’s Cajun Cafe, filed for Chapter 11 protection earlier this month, according to Nation Restaurant News. Other recent bankruptcy filings include Bravo Brio Restaurants LLC, which operates 25 Brio Italian Grille restaurants and 23 Bravo Italian Kitchen restaurants, as well as Red Lobster, Tijuana Flats, TGI Friday’s and Hooters.
What kind of restaurants does Sun Holdings operate?
The acquisition expands Sun Holdings’ already expanding restaurant collection, which includes more than 1,800 eateries in 27 states, including Applebee’s, Arby’s, Burger King, Freebirds World Burrito, Golden Coral, IHOP, McAllister’s, Papa John’s, Popeyes and Taco Bueno, according to the company’s website.
“This acquisition represents an exciting step in our growth strategy,” Guillermo Perales, president and CEO of Sun Holdings, said in a statement on the company’s website. “Bar Louie’s signature martinis and distinctive brand make it a strong addition to our casual dining portfolio.”
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, Nation Restaurant News reported.
