WASHINGTON – John Bolton, who served as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, surrendered to authorities and appeared in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland, on October 17 after being charged with mishandling classified documents.

Bolton, a former senior Trump official who turned into an avowed opponent of the president, is the latest in a line of people considered to be Trump’s enemies to be indicted by the Justice Department following the indictments of former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Mr. Bolton appeared in Maryland state court on Friday morning, according to a person familiar with his activities.

In an 18-count indictment, Bolton is accused of sharing “diary-like” accounts with two family members in 2018 and 2019 detailing his activities as national security adviser, including classified information.

Mr. Bolton denied the charges in a statement, calling him “the latest target of President Trump to weaponize the Department of Justice to prosecute those he considers his enemies.”

“These charges are not just about his focus on me and my diary, but his focused efforts to intimidate his opponents,” he said.

Mr. Bolton’s lawyer, Abby Rowell, said the underlying facts of the case had been investigated and resolved “years before” Mr. Trump returned to the Oval Office. “These charges stem from portions of Col. Bolton’s personal diary spanning his 45-year career, records that are unclassified and shared only with his immediate family, and are known to the FBI dating back to 2021.”
