A prominent icon of the civil rights movement dies
Civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson has died at the age of 84 after a long battle with progressive supranuclear palsy, a progressive neuromuscular disease similar to Parkinson’s disease. He was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, presidential candidate, and one of the world’s most famous black activists.
Born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1941, Mr. Jackson’s rise to fame began after he and seven other men were arrested in 1960 for protesting racial discrimination at the town’s public library. He then joined Martin Luther King Jr.’s burgeoning civil rights movement and was only a few feet away when King was assassinated in 1968.
He continued to negotiate the release of global hostages and criticized corporations for their lack of diversity and failure to support voting rights. Jackson founded what would become the Rainbow/Push Coalition and ran for president as a Democrat in 1984 and 1988, energizing and registering millions of black voters.
Jackson was known for his “I Am Somebody” chant, which inspired generations of activists.
