The New York Yankees and their fans were treated to all the glory of the senses at the Grapefruit League opener at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
Aaron Judge’s two home runs and prospect Spencer Jones’ cracking bat with a monster shot. Feeling the 83 degree sunshine in Hillsborough County.
And, well, the smell of raw sewage.
A pair of sewer pipes broke outside the main entrance to George M. Steinbrenner Field, causing fans to tiptoe around what security guards called “poo water.”
The situation underground was even worse.
The Yankees’ clubhouse was flooded with sewage, and manager Aaron Boone told reporters, “It’s a terrible situation. It’s all over the place.”
The sewage reportedly did not reach the part of the clubhouse where the players’ lockers were located. However, the confusion forced Yankees players to be interviewed in the hallway, where the smell of funk was still evident.
It’s a completely different way to start playing Grapefruit League.
It’s an unfortunate development for the stadium, which has undergone multimillion-dollar renovations in recent years after the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays relocated during the first regular season last year due to hurricane damage.
The good news for the Yankees was that they defeated the Detroit Tigers 20-2. In less-than-optimal news, the New York Mets are scheduled to be on site in the morning, and will have time to fix the problem right away.
And I hope the smell goes away too.
