Italy arrests Ukrainians for attacking the Nordstream pipeline, German prosecutors say

Date:

Italian police have arrested a Ukrainian suspected of coordinating an attack on the Nordstream pipeline, German prosecutors say.

The explosion almost three years ago left a swirl of gas from Node Streams 1 and 2 from the two major conduits that transported Russian gas to Europe, prompting a major operation to find out who was responsible.

The origins of the explosion have been the subject of intense speculation in Europe after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and further incited European political tensions. Neither pipeline actively transported gas to Europe at the time of the leak, but still held the gas under pressure.

The suspect, named Serhii K under German Privacy Act, was part of a group of people who planted explosive devices in September 2022 at Node Stream 1 + 2 near Bornholm,” the prosecutor added. He is taken to a German judge after his transfer.
