Israeli forces have effectively recovered the body of Hamas leader Mohamed Singhwar in a tunnel under a European hospital in southern Gaza, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on Sunday.
The IDF said the body went through the identification process and made it public.
Singwar is the younger brother of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in southern Gaza in October.
His death is the latest in a series of assassins that have seriously hit the group’s top brass, but has yet to break the grip against the power of the besieged enclave.
The elusive Singwar was targeted in a massive airstrike at Khan Eunice’s hospital on May 13, the day after Hamas released Israeli-American soldier Edan Alexander.
At the time, the IDF said it had attacked “command and control centre Hama sterolists” in the hospital’s underground infrastructure.
However, it took over two weeks to say that Israel had decisively killed Singhwar on a strike.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the announcement on the 600th day of the war two weeks ago.
“We changed the face of the Middle East, pushed terrorists out of our territory, entered the Gaza Strip with strength and eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists.
The attack killed 28 Palestinians and injured more than 50 others, the Palestinian Health Ministry said after the strike.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
