Labor Day protests begin in DC with national rallies planned
A gathering of thousands of people in Washington, D.C. protests union destruction and inequality ahead of Labor Day weekend.
Labor Day is Monday, September 1st, with banks, post offices and stock markets closing on holidays while many national restaurant chains, retailers and grocery stores are open.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, holidays celebrate “social and economic achievements of American workers.” The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, and by 1894 23 states had adopted leave. President Glover Cleveland signed the law on June 28, 1894, which marks the first Monday of September each year as a national holiday.
