The NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange will close on Thursday and reopen on Friday, June 20th. The US bond market will also close on June 19, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
June, known as America’s second Independence Day, has been commemorated as a federally recognized holiday since 2021, offering millions of Americans the opportunity to commemorate the end of slavery.
Holiday celebrated the date Major General Gordon Granger’s arrival in Galveston Bay, Texas in 1865, declaring that blacks, who had been enslaved by 2,000 Union forces, were free.
After closing in June, it will be business as usual on Wall Street until early July. The next scheduled stock market closure is Friday, July 4th, in compliance with Independence Day.
