In-N-Out CEO Lynsi Snyder had harsh words to the state where his parents built the Burger Empire.
Appearing on the “related” podcast, Snyder aired a complaint with California, saying that he would be relocating his family to Tennessee with the opening of the company’s second headquarters.
“There are a lot of great things in California,” Snyder said. “But raising a family here isn’t easy. It’s not easy to do business here.”
Snyder was also tired of the state’s implementation of rules surrounding state subsidies. This led to state health officials closing two restaurants in 2021 to not check vaccine status.
“You have to do this,” Snyder said of the vaccine order for indoor dining. “You need to have this plastic thing between us and our customers. It was really awful, do you know? And I look back and we should have pushed that kind of thing even harder. We’re not police our customers.”
Adding Tennessee HQ, but not leaving California
IN-N-OUT has announced that many of California’s corporate employees will be relocating from Irvine, Orange County to their offices at Baldwin Park in the Los Angeles area.
It is set to be completed by the end of 2029, a mile from the first restaurant opened by Harry and Esthersnyder.
The company said after the Irvine offices close, employees at the company will be located either in the Baldwin Park office or in the Tennessee office. The Nashville area office is scheduled to open in 2026, the company said at the time.
Snyder downplays East Coast expansion
Snyder further reduced the possibility of expanding the East Coast, pointing out logistical difficulties.
“We can get to Tennessee from a warehouse in Texas. We have a warehouse, but we don’t do our own meat there, so we can deliver it from Texas,” Snyder said.
The company operates 281 of its 418 locations in California, but has been steadily expanding in recent years. Snyder added that the majority of the company’s stores are in California.
“Florida begged us, but we’re still saying no,” Snyder said. “East Coast states, we’re still saying no.”
USA Today reached out to In-N-Out for comment and did not receive a response as of Monday evening.
