ICE, Immigration, Minnesota, Winter Cold, Olympics: Daily Briefing

Date:

morning! Welcome to the daily briefing. This morning’s breaking news is:

nicole farato Here’s the news you need to know on Tuesday, from immigration enforcement in Minnesota to Americans without power in the cold. Also, what happens in a polyamorous breakup?

Cooling effect on ICE?

A major shift in tone occurred Monday after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called his phone call with President Donald Trump “productive” and said the president agreed to consider reducing the number of immigration agents in Minnesota and would allow state investigators to independently investigate the shooting death of Alex Preti by Border Patrol agents. Trump himself said the two were “on the same wavelength.”

Also on Monday, the White House announced that Border Patrol Commander Tom Homan would be sent to Minnesota as the Trump administration’s new immigration enforcement head, while Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino, who has spearheaded the Trump administration’s militarized approach to immigration enforcement, was reported to be leaving Minneapolis.

The changes come amid growing backlash after a federal immigration agent shot and killed two people in Minneapolis this month. Opinion polls show President Trump’s approval rating for immigrants is at an all-time low. Republican lawmakers are increasingly calling for an investigation into the murder of ICU nurse Alex Preti, 37, as Democrats refuse to defund the Department of Homeland Security despite a potential government shutdown. At the same time, dissatisfaction with ICE could endanger the voters Republicans need in 2026 battleground elections.

Inside an ICE arrest

“I passed a detention center full of people who appeared to be Latino and East African. The dejected faces and the cries, cries, and pleas of these men, women, and children (reportedly as young as 5 years old) will forever haunt me. But perhaps even more haunting is the laughter of the agents nearby. Is our life just a joke to them?”

– Minneapolis resident Patti O’Keefe shared her story of an ICE arrest with USA TODAY Opinion.
