The Consumer Product Safety Commission says it has been recalled nationwide after millions of hoses burst during use, causing nearly 30 injuries.
The “expandable burstproof hose” of approximately 3.6 million hydrotech brands sold at major retailers including Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot and Target have been recalled, CPSC said in a statement. As of July 24, 222 reports of a hose burst, resulting in 29 injuries, including “five reports of hearing loss due to one bone bruise, two sprains and hose burst sounds.”
According to the Hydrotech website, the liner inside the hose “can expand and burst if strain relief breaks or is read out completely.” Winston products and CPSC in Glenwillow, Ohio have agreed to a voluntary recall, the website added.
According to CPSC, the hose was sold from January 2021 to April 2025 for $20 to $136 between January 2021 and April 2025.
Which hoses were recalled?
The voluntary recall includes a Hydrotech 5/8-inch “expandable anti-burst hose” manufactured before August 31, 2024, CPSC said. The hoses were sold in a range of colours, with lengths of “25, 50, 60, 75, 100, 200 feet.”
“The date code marking is on the edge of the hose that adheres to the spigot and is visible when the black rubber washer is removed. -242 or -243 is included in this recall,” CPSC added.
What should someone with a recalled hose do?
CPSC warned that the recalled product could “rupt” and could pose a “hazard of impact and a temporary risk of hearing loss.” The group also urged customers to “quickly stop using the recalled hose.”
“Consumers who purchase products from other retailers should cut off the regulator end of the hose and contact Winston products for a full refund,” the CPSC said. “To receive a refund, the consumer must submit a photo of the cut hose and display the location of the date code described in the consumer’s initials and the regulator’s permanent marker on the Winston Products online form at https://hydrotechproducts.com/recall.”
