How will government closures affect emails and post offices?

The US postal service will not be affected by the looming government closures that could begin on October 1st.

The parties’ parliamentary leaders have failed to enter into a contract to pass the funding law to avoid the closure.

If they have not reached an agreement, some of the government will be closed on October 1st, the first day of the US government in 2026.

The closure probably emerged after President Donald Trump and Congressional leaders emerged from the private White House meeting on Monday, September 29th without a deal. Republicans are pushing for makeshift solutions to expand current funding through November 21st, but Democrats continue to fight for changes related to healthcare.

With government closures, services deemed important will continue, while other non-essential functions will close or reduce staffing.

Are postal services and postal services affected by government closures?

Postal services, including postal delivery, will continue even if the government closes.

In a September 25th statement, the US Postal Service confirmed that its operations will not be interrupted by the shutdown, and the Post Office will remain open for “normal business.”

“Our services are not affected by government closures as we are an independent entity that is generally funded through the sale of products and services, not taxes,” the statement said.

What is a government closure?

For each fiscal year, Congress allocates funds for federal agencies to run.

However, if lawmakers do not agree to expenditure or temporary spending bills, some federal agencies will need to effectively shut down or suspend normal spending, according to the Human Resources Administration.

Some jobs or services are deemed essential and will continue to work in the event of a closure.

What important services will not be affected by government closures?

In addition to the post office, some federally operated agencies remain open in the event of government closures.

Social Security Services, Medicare and air traffic control are considered essential services, but “non-essential” work, such as national park operations, will be suspended.

How long will the government closure last?

Since 1977, there have been 21 federal closures. In total, they lasted 121 days, or an average of nearly eight days per shutdown.

The longest government shutdown in the last 50 years, lasting 35 days under the first Trump administration from December 2018 to January 2019, occurred.

The other two closures took place during Trump’s first term. The first in January 2018 lasted for three days, and the second lasted for several hours in February 2018.
