The Lightning Strike is some of the most amazing power demonstrations on the planet. We’ve all seen trees, mountains and skyscrapers being struck. But what happens when a car gets hit by lightning?
The hassle-free answer is solid “it depends.” Every year, Lightning strikes many vehicles around the world. In some cases, it brings simple burn marks to the roof, but it also blows away electrical systems and vehicles that are burning to the ground. Why some strikes draw a burn mark with a cool story, while other strikes are total cars? Both the type of lightning and the type of car are responsible.
The path with the least resistance, not zero resistance
To dramatically simplify things, lightning is a massive electrical arc that is unleashed when the difference between clouds and ground overwhelms the insulation properties of the air. All insulators can be powered by electricity if there is enough power. The only thing that changes is inefficiency. This inefficiency drives explosions of light, heat and sound as lightning burns branches of the atmosphere into instantaneous plasma on its way to the ground.
Lightning simply attacks, even if it means running through the atmosphere on the way that it is the least resistance path. This means that the charge will not be stopped by the rubber on the tire or other materials in the car, but that’s not the point. Cars can protect residents because they guide lightning rather than lightning.
Faraday Cage and You
This is why planes, trains and cars tend to do well despite being shocked and shockingly impacted. Their metal shells naturally move around from their residents, and in most cases, power misses important internal systems. All this happens with sufficient efficiency, unlike what you do with air, so even the power of a lightning strike rarely melts. Newer combined vehicles often have metal woven into the structure to maintain this capability. Electric cars aren’t different, but I think it’s much easier to ignite gasoline than a lithium-ion battery.
Of course, not all lightning bolts are contained near the same amount of power; bliss The more they have, the greater the challenge of channeling that power safely. Not all cars are the same as soft-top convertibles and vehicles with retracted roofs.
Stripped casually: Potential damage
A less powerful strike may require you to reset your gauge or infotainment system, but a less powerful strike will hardly damage it. More powerful strikes often damage the antenna. Antennas are generally those strikes that came in and include small metal aviation explosions. Other common lightning damage is found in the rear window, as small defroster wires can be overwhelmed by power and can crush the glass. Tires are also a common casualty due to their lack of conductivity. As lightning passes through them on their way to the ground, it tends to flash the air inside and expand to the point of explosion.
As expected, a gas or oil leaking vehicle could be the mother of all sparks, so if hit by lightning it becomes a substantial fire hazard. A well-maintained modern vehicle with metal bodies and systems insulated from the above bodies is extremely safe, even with all modern electronics. But the Yankee old beater with backyard wiring and strong gasoline smell will probably not be able to withstand a hit.
According to Edison International, if your vehicle is struck by lightning, sit on your lap and avoid touching unnecessary interior bits and leave it on for at least 30 minutes. Finally, check for external damage before starting the vehicle again.
