A police officer was fatally shot dead in York County, Pennsylvania
Three officers were killed and two injured in the York County shooting. The suspect was shot dead.
Wednesday’s fatal shooting of three officers in rural Pennsylvania killed more than 30 law enforcement officials by hostile means in 2025, according to the national nonprofit organization monitoring such figures.
A total of 65 officers have fallen into duties this year, including 37 people killed by hostile shootings or physical or vehicle assault, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Others died as a result of an explosion, accident, work-related illness, or other factors.
Nearly 170 officers died on missions in 2024, the site reported.
Three police officers were fatally shot dead and two others injured Wednesday in response to reports of a domestic uproar in North Codra Township, York County, a rural area of 10 miles, York, Pennsylvania. Authorities said the gunman committed suicide.
Officer figures show that the deaths brought the number of officers killed in the shooting this year to 31.
On Jan. 15, 41-year-old deputy sheriff Jesus Vargas of Brazoria County, Texas, south of Houston, was fatally shot while providing a warrant, the site said. Recently, both sergeants. Lee Sorensen, 56, and Officer Eric Estrada, 31, of the Tremonton Garland Police Department in Utah, were fatally shot on August 17, responding to multiple 911 hang-up calls at their residence.
Three officers – Chicago. Rain, Louisiana. And in the West York, Pennsylvania area, just north of where Wednesday’s incident occurred, he was killed in a friendly fire this year, according to the officer’s Downsite.
Prior to Wednesday’s incident, the recent death of an officer took place in San Jacinto County, Texas, north of Houston. Highway patrol trooper Jerry Adamik, 44, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on September 15, and responded to a call for assistance from law enforcement officials for emergency calls, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
On July 18, three veteran lawmakers were killed in an explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s training facility, serving the department’s explosive details. Detective Joshua Kelly Ecklund, 41; Victor Remus, 40; and 58-year-old William Osborne, who was all killed as a result of the morning explosion, represented 74 years of service.
“There are no words to describe the pain and sadness we feel,” Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna said at the time. “These heroes represent the best in our department and illustrate courage, integrity and selfless service. This is not only a heartbreaking loss for our family, but also a heartbreaking loss for all of us.”
Wednesday’s death in York County has resulted in 14 law enforcement officers, including York County’s ties, since 1929, have died in duties, according to Withing York, a website that records the county’s history and culture.
“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro told reporters Wednesday. “We hope that this community comes together and thinks about not only the people wearing uniforms, but the people behind them, and these families are extraordinary.
