House passes government shutdown avoidance bill

The funding package is expected to be sent to the Senate next ahead of the Jan. 30 deadline.

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives passed a funding measure on Jan. 8 to prevent another government shutdown by the end of January, but that is looking increasingly unlikely as Democrats show little appetite for a second painful political brawl after last year’s record-setting fight.

The spending bill was approved on a broad bipartisan vote, with 397 members voting in favor and 28 voting against it.

The Senate then faces a deadline of Jan. 30, including a one-week recess, to avoid a funding logjam similar to the one in October that triggered a historic budget crisis.

But unlike during the longest government shutdown in history in the fall, much of the government has already been funded through the remainder of the fiscal year. Therefore, even if another disaster were to occur in the coming weeks, only a partial closure would occur.

But Democratic leaders have already said they don’t want that to happen, especially as lawmakers continue to negotiate over how to address rising health care costs, a central issue of last year’s government shutdown.

“The good news is that the Republican appropriators are working with us and we’re making good progress on that front,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on ABC’s “This Week” on January 4.
