Images of President Donald Trump’s hands, which appear to be covered in patches of makeup, have become a virus for the past few days after similar images of his hands were captured and circulated last month.

The photo zoomed in on the president’s photo during an appearance in the Oval Office on August 22 shows the back of one hand, with a section of skin covered in light foundation makeup that caused speculation among social media users.

Trump’s bruises on his right hand on Monday, August 25th were evident in a photo taken in an oval office during a meeting with the president and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

The White House announced on July 17 that Republican leaders have recently been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common venous condition, after images taken by the president showed visible swelling in their lower extremities. White House press chief Karoline Leavitt said at a press conference in July that the diagnosis came to investigate swelling and bruises in the leg behind the president’s right hand after a medical test.

White House doctor bruised Trump’s hand in July

White House doctor Sean Barbabera described chronic venous deficiency as “benign and common” in a president’s health memo.

In a July memo, Barbabella said the recent images showing Trump’s hand bruises “consistent with frequent manual mild soft tissue stimulation,” referring to the use of aspirin as a standard cardiovascular prophylactic therapy.

“President Trump is in good health,” he said.

Similar images of apparent bruises at the president’s hands made a round online after French President Emmanuel Macron and Trump visited the White House on February 24th. Leavitt said the president’s hands were hurt by an NBC News statement that “it’s because they’re constantly working every day and waving.”

A photo of Trump’s hands covered in make-up was also seen at a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland on July 27th.

What is chronic venous deficiency?

Chronic vein deficiency, common among people in the 70s, occurs when the veins in the legs struggle to send blood back to the heart. Leavitt said in July that there was “no evidence” for more serious conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (thrombosis in the legs or arms of deep veins) and arterial disease. In additional trials, “there are no signs of heart failure, kidney damage or systemic disease,” Leavitt said.

The White House has not mentioned handmaking in its presidential health update.

Trump turned 79 on June 14th. He was the second oldest person to serve as president of the United States and began his oldest term as president.
