Here’s how “tokenized” stocks are revolutionizing investment access

Date:

Tokenization has been one of the hottest buzzwords in the crypto industry for the past 12 months. Now, we are finally beginning to see what happens when blockchain technology meets traditional stock market investments.

June 30th, Robin Hood Market The launch of tokenized stocks for retail investors has shaken up the financial world. According to Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, these tokenized stocks represent the biggest innovation in the capital market in decades. But exactly what are they? And what do they mean to investors?

What are tokenized stocks?

Tokenization refers to the conversion of real-world assets into digital assets that live in blockchains. Ownership of that asset is represented by a digital token that can be traded in the same way as a crypto token.

In this case, the real world assets being converted are stocks, and the place where they are traded is on Robinhood’s trading platform. For now, trading in these tokenized stocks is open 24/7, but according to Robinhood, the trading will soon be open 24/7.

It helps to think of these tokenized stocks as digital twins. Robinhood buys real-world inventory and then converts it into a digital token with small blockchain alchemy. In theory, this digital token mimics the price action of real-world stocks on a 1:1 basis. If the value of Company X rises 10% in one day, the token value will also rise 10%.

Strong Points

Tokenization offers many benefits to retail investors. One is to increase the liquidity of investors being able to trade these tokens on the blockchain. Second, you have access to the speed, efficiency, security, and transparency of blockchain technology. Third, they can trade small fractional shares of tokenized company stock.

According to Robinhood, tokenized stocks modernize the traditional system of stock buying and selling. If you’ve ever been frustrated by not being able to trade stocks on weekends or holidays, tokenized stocks represent a possible solution. Furthermore, having a token allows you to do a variety of things that are impossible in the traditional financial world thanks to the power of distributed finance.

Robinhood is the first to begin offering tokenized stocks in Europe as a way to provide European investors with access to the US market. Robinhood says that more than 200 tokenized stocks and exchange sales funds (ETFs) can be used to trade on the platform. In the future, US investors may purchase tokenized stocks from Europe, Asia, or Latin America.

Cons

However, tokenized stock has its drawbacks. The main goal is to be exposed to the underlying real-world stock prices for investors. They do not grant the privilege of traditional stock ownership. For example, you do not have the right to vote. Additionally, if the stock pays dividends, you may not receive those dividends.

You really need to read the fine print. For example, Robinhood says that its tokenized stock actually pays dividends to investors. This depends on the smart contracts in the blockchain and how they are written for each token.

Things become more complicated when you move beyond the publicly available companies. For example, it is possible to create tokenized fairness for private companies. At an investor event in France in June, Robin Hood actually handed out Openai and SpaceX tokens.

It caused a bit of a stir. Openai, for example, made a quick comment, saying that these tokens are not Openai equity and do not represent the type of ownership of the company. The company warned investors not to cooperate with Robinhood on launching these tokens, and not tolerate it.

Robinhood says the ultimate goal is to open the private market world to retail investors. Why should super-rich accredited investors who can invest early in Hot Tech Company be super-rich investors? Why should venture capitalists become the main gatekeepers of these companies?

That’s potentially what makes tokenized stocks so innovative. They could lead to the transfer of power, money and influence in the financial world. They can fundamentally change the way we think about valuing both public and private companies. And they were able to forever blur the line between investing in public companies and private companies.

American Investor Outlook

Now, US regulators are competing to keep up with the pace of crypto innovation. Until all regulatory issues are resolved, these tokenized stocks from Robinhood will be available only to European investors.

Fortunately, several crypto platforms are currently working on tokenized stocks for US investors in their competition with Robinhood. My prediction is that tokenized stocks will become mainstream in the US by the end of next year.

Crypto innovation is taking place at an unprecedented scale and pace as the Trump administration kicked the cryptography genie out of the bottle. Tokenized stocks are the first of what should be a long, new innovation for individual investors.
