Trump says Israel agrees to a plan to end the war in Gaza
President Donald Trump said he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reached a contract to end the war in Gaza. Does Hamas agree?
Hamas, a Palestinian extremist group, said on October 3 that it agreed to release all living or dead Israelite hostages under the conditions of President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan aimed at ending the war in Gaza.
In a statement shared with Reuters, the group agreed to hand over control of the Gaza Strip to an independent Arab-Muslim-backed Palestinian body and said it was willing to discuss other aspects of Trump’s proposal as part of the talks.
The response came hours after Trump threatened to hunt down and kill Hamas members and threatened extremist groups to respond to his proposals on Sunday evening, October 5th.
“If we reach this last accidental agreement, all hell will break out against Hamas, just as no one has ever seen before,” Trump said in the Society of Truth.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the first to agree to Trump’s peace proposal when he visited the White House on September 29th.
Among the demands of the plan is that Hamas has collapsed and there is no role in governing the enclave. The plan does not explicitly address the future Palestinian state’s thinking that Netanyahu appears to have ruled out.
Hamas killed 1,200 people and took over 250 hostages on October 7, 2023 during an attack on communities in southern Israel. According to Hamasran Health Ministry, Israel launched a military operation in Gaza, killing more than 65,000 Palestinians two years later. Israel says Hamas numbers are unreliable.
Israel believes Hamas still holds 48 hostages, of which 20 are thought to be alive.
