At least nine people have been killed after a river bridge collapsed in western India’s state of Gujarat, Indian press agency Press Trust cited police officers.
Gujarat Health Minister Rashesh Patel said some vehicles were on the bridge when some of them collapsed and sent more into the river. He said at least five people had been rescued.
The incident occurred in the Vadodara district of Gujarat. This has witnessed heavy rain over the past few days. The bridge was built in 1985, Patel said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the accident was “deeply saddened” and expressed his sadness to those who died.
India’s infrastructure has long been plagued by safety concerns, sometimes leading to major disasters on highways and bridges.
In 2022, a century ago cable suspension bridge collapsed into a river in Gujarat, causing hundreds of people to enter the water, killing at least 132 people.
