nicole farato here. After playing USA TODAY’s crossword, read the news you need to know on Monday, from Golden Globes recap to the latest updates after the Minnesota ICE shooting. Next up is the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team. ⛸️
“One Battle After Another” wins the 83rd Golden Globe Awards
“One Battle” was Sunday night’s big winner, bringing home four trophies for the Paul Thomas Anderson-directed film, including Teyana Taylor’s (who sported a whale-tail cutout dress) her first Globe win.
But the ceremony, hosted by the funny, flattering and flirtatious Nikki Glazer, was nothing short of Shakespearean tragedy for the competition. Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet won Best Drama and Best Actress for Jessie Buckley (see her Julia Roberts scream). “The Secret Agent” star Wagner Moura became the first Brazilian man to win a Globe for acting, winning best actor in a drama.
Timothée Chalamet (thanks to Shark Tank) and Rose Byrne won their first Globes for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy/Musical. The Best Supporting Actor award went to Stellan Skarsgård for “Sentimental Value.”
Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo delivered this message about President Trump, and his “Sinners” co-stars Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku each made their baby bump debuts.
Check out the full list of winners and start scrolling red carpet looks with your colleagues on Monday.
More news you need to know right now
- President Trump warned Iranian leaders: President Trump has threatened to intervene as anti-government protests continue in Iran. Human rights groups are sounding the alarm over the rising death toll of protesters.
- Fire at historic Mississippi synagogue: A suspect has been arrested by authorities in Jackson, Mississippi, after a fire broke out at the state’s largest synagogue, damaging part of the Jewish prayer space and some sacred items.
- Dry January forever? New recommendations from the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Department of Health and Human Services call on Americans to “reduce their alcohol intake” or avoid it altogether if they have certain health conditions. Scientists, nutritionists and advocates say the new guidance is too vague for people to apply in their daily lives and say the Trump administration has missed an opportunity to warn about alcohol’s links to cancer and other health problems.
Let’s take a look
Thousands march to protest against ICE
Activities across the country over the weekend were spurred by the Jan. 7 shooting death of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, by federal agents. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe for Good’s family ended with more than $1.5 million, and Rep. Ilhan Omar was denied entry to an ICE facility in Minneapolis. See photos from protests across the country and read why state charges against ICE shootings are possible. However, that’s difficult.
I want to talk to you about something.
See who has been selected to represent Olympic skating
The U.S. figure skating team for the 2026 Winter Olympics was announced Sunday after four days of competition at the national championships. The roster of 16 skaters includes some of figure skating’s biggest stars, including Ilya Marinin, Amber Glenn and Alisa Liu. Veteran ice dancing pair Madison Chock and Evan Bates will be competing for the fourth time, while Marin and Glenn will be making their Olympic debut in Italy. The team spoke to USA TODAY Sports about earning the spot.
