Seventeen people were injured in a knife attack at Hamburg’s central station, four of whom are in danger.
German police say they have arrested a 39-year-old German woman.
Six people were “severely injured” while seven others were “lightly injured,” according to the fire department. Dozens of emergency services were active on the ground.
Police previously said several people had maintained “life-threatening injuries” in the attack, but reliable numbers on the number of injured people were not readily available.
An investigation into the incident is underway. Police told CNN that officers are currently not supposed for political motivation, but were investigating whether the suspect was in a state of mental distress.
Video footage from scenes shot by CNN affiliate RTL Germany shows people in a forensic lawsuit examining the area while police gather at the station.
Following the attack, Germany’s Friedrich Merz thanked the city’s emergency responders for their assistance, according to federal government spokesman Stefan Kornelius, and his thoughts are with the victims and their families.
Hamburg’s central station is Germany’s busiest passenger station, with over 550,000 travelers per day, according to the city’s website.
Germany has faced an increase in knife crime in recent years, with several incidents that have sparked tensions over the transition ahead of the parliamentary elections in February.
Some parts of the country were concerned about a series of famous attacks allegedly committed by asylum seekers or immigrants.
In January, a 28-year-old man from Afghanistan was arrested after a knife attack in Asschaffenburg, Germany, where two people, including a toddler, were killed.
Last year, a Syrian man turned himself back and confessed that he would stab the three of them and killed him, causing others to injure at the festival in Solingen, a West German city.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
