Generation Z, mass panic in Iran and Tiktok

Vice President JD Vance says America is “not a war with Iran,” but young people aren’t that sure. Gen Z joined social media to share a ton of misinformation about the US entering “#WW3” following the US strike at Iran’s nuclear site over the weekend.

Unlike millennials who grew up witnessing US invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan, Gen Z still has no experience of the political culture of the US engaged in war.

This is a cohort born since 9/11, and its overall memory has so far been largely defined by the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, their preference for dealing with humor captures a very realistic emotion following the scary news of the weekend.

“I just want to live in peace with my dog, but I think that’s too much to ask,” said one Tiktkar in a video with over 195K viewers. Another wrote that fears about conflict “really wonder if I would gain the experience of being a husband and father.”

“It’s not just fear, it’s the loss of innocence,” said Christen Harrison, a well-known professor at UNC Hassman Journalism and Media.

“There’s more to it than fear. There’s a real hit in the sense of betrayal and trust,” Harrison added.

“Bends” due to the war

The few hours posts we attacked with Iranian toes attack the line between meaninglessness and melancholy on the typical Gen Z-way, calling for the cognitive dissonance of scrolling through “GRWM.”

Randomness is inherent to how Gen Z is currently trolling reality. Swifties said they were ready for Iranian “sleeping cells” by quoting lyrics from their favorite pop stars.

“We’re so cooked,” read one video caption that features medleys of uplifting clips set in Nicki Minaj’s “spaceship” and footage of missiles playing through the night sky. This kind of video is not zero for older people. Or, even if it doesn’t seem interesting, it’s found for young people that calm and distractions.

The absurdity of these posts captures how strange it feels to be happening in normal life, as civilians around the world are in life-threatening situations, Harrison said.

“They’re almost laughing at themselves,” she said. The reliance on hyperbolic humor helps Gen Z manage feelings about “terrifying but surreal news” and topics they may not yet understand.

The post also speaks of issues that most evaluate Gen Z issues, such as who will serve in the war and social inequality in the context of fallout in the environment of strikes at nuclear facilities.

Many American youth have already made it clear that they do not want military intervention overseas. Last year’s Gen Z Z voters vote found that young people were more supportive of Palestinians and that the US didn’t want to send aid to Israel.

How to deal with a stressful news cycle

Below the post there is a very realistic need to deal with the stress of the scary news, Harrison said.

If you think that just thinking to yourself “It’s all okay” won’t calm you down enough, Harrison recommends putting guardrails on your news consumption. Also, if you want to share the news, do so with caution, she said, not to re-tramature your followers with violent or offensive material. For example, she recommends placing links to articles and videos in captions or comments rather than sharing sensitive content itself.

Spiral Online is a little less scary when stress is led to action, authorized therapist Monaeshaiker previously told USA Today. For a politically enthusiastic generation like Gen Z, this may seem like reaching out to canvas, volunteers, donations to charity, and elected officials.

“Being part of a group can also provide a sense of support and community.”
