According to AWS at re:Invent 2025 this week, the chatbot hype cycle is effectively over and Frontier AI agents will replace it.
That’s the blunt message coming out of Las Vegas this week. The industry’s obsession with chat interfaces is being replaced by “frontier agents” who do far more demanding tasks: not just talk, but work autonomously for days at a time.
We are moving from the novelty phase of generative AI to a tougher era of infrastructure economics and operational plumbing. The “wow” factor of poetry writing bots has faded. Now is the time to check the infrastructure required to run these systems at scale.
Addressing the plumbing crisis at AWS re:Invent 2025
Until recently, building frontier AI agents capable of performing complex, non-deterministic tasks was a bespoke engineering nightmare. Early adopters have spent resources on a combination of tools to manage context, memory, and security.
AWS is trying to eliminate that complexity with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. This is a managed service that acts as the agent’s operating system and handles the backend work of state management and context retrieval. The efficiency gains from standardizing this layer cannot be ignored.
Take MongoDB as an example. By decommissioning our homegrown infrastructure for AgentCore, we integrated our toolchain and pushed our agent-based application to production in eight weeks. It’s a process that used to take months of evaluation and maintenance time. The PGA Tour used this platform to build a content generation system that reduced costs by 95 percent while increasing write speeds by 1,000 percent, delivering even greater benefits.
Software teams are also gaining dedicated employees. At re:Invent 2025, AWS unveiled three specific Frontier AI agents: Kiro (Virtual Developer), Security Agent, and DevOps Agent. Kiro is more than just a code completion tool. It connects directly to your workflow with “features” (specific integrations for tools like Datadog, Figma, Stripe, etc.) that allow it to act in context rather than just guessing syntax.
Running the agent for several days consumes a large amount of computing power. If you’re paying standard on-demand rates for that, your ROI evaporates.
AWS knows this, which is why they’re being aggressive with their hardware announcements this year. Powered by 3nm chips, the new Trainium3 UltraServers claim a 4.4x increase in computing performance compared to the previous generation. For organizations training large base models, this reduces training timelines from months to weeks.
But the more interesting change is where that computing resides. Data sovereignty continues to be a headache for global enterprises, often hindering the adoption of sensitive AI workloads in the cloud. AWS is countering this with “AI factories” (essentially shipping racks of Trainium chips and NVIDIA GPUs directly into customers’ existing data centers). It’s a hybrid strategy that recognizes the simple truth that for some data, the public cloud is still too far away.
Challenge to the mountain of heritage
Innovations like those seen with Frontier AI agents are great, but most IT budgets are being squeezed by technical debt. The team spends about 30% of its time just keeping the lights on.
During re:Invent 2025, Amazon updated AWS Transform to specifically attack this. Use agent AI to handle the heavy lifting of upgrading legacy code. This service can now handle full-stack Windows modernization. This includes upgrading .NET apps and SQL Server databases.
Air Canada used it to modernize thousands of Lambda functions. It was over in a few days. Doing this manually would have cost five times as much and would have taken weeks.
For developers who want to actually write code, the ecosystem is expanding. The Strands Agents SDK was previously Python only, but now supports TypeScript. As the lingua franca of the web, it brings type safety to the chaotic output of LLM and is a necessary evolution.
Smart governance in the era of frontier AI agents
There is danger here. Agents that operate autonomously “without intervention for days” are also agents that can corrupt databases or leak PII without anyone noticing until it’s too late.
AWS is attempting to encompass this risk in its “AgentCore Policy.” This feature allows teams to set natural language boundaries for what agents can and cannot do. Combined with “evaluation,” which uses pre-built metrics to monitor agent performance, it provides a much-needed safety net.
Security teams are empowered with updates to Security Hub. This allows signals from GuardDuty, Inspector, and Macie to be tied to a single “event” instead of flooding your dashboard with individual alerts. GuardDuty itself is expanding to use ML to detect complex threat patterns across EC2 and ECS clusters.
We are clearly past the pilot program stage. The tools announced at AWS re:Invent 2025 are designed for production environments, from specialized silicon to managed frameworks for frontier AI agents. The question for business leaders is no longer “What can AI do?” But, “Can we have the infrastructure to make that work?”
