Celebrating PSG victory in France will be fatal, officials say
More than 500 people were arrested at the final Champions League celebration in France, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
PARIS – More than 500 people were arrested by police, killing two and 192 injured at the final Champions League celebration in France, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.
It erupted across the French capital on Saturday night after Paris Saint-Germain crushed Italian enemies to win the Champions League for the first time, but a skirmish with police later threatened to ruin the party.
The interim assessment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs on Sunday morning was that 559 people were arrested, including 491 in Paris, with 320 people in police custody, of which 254 were placed in Paris.
One fatal accident occurred when a young man in his 20s died in a collision with a vehicle, police chief Laurentinez told reporters, but in a 17-year-old city in the southwestern Dachshunds, French media reported.
“The judicial investigation will determine whether it (the deadly nature of Paris) can be linked to celebrations. At this stage, it appears to be related to the festival,” Nunes said.
On champion Elysie Avenue, a line of boutiques, a bus shelter was destroyed and projectiles were projected onto the Royot police.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Home Affairs reported hundreds of fires, including over 200 vehicles burned. Approximately 22 members of the security forces and seven firefighters were harmed.
Nunez warned that there could be more skirmishes on Sunday as PSG parades to champion Elyseese before PSG celebrates the title with fans at the Parc Des Princes Stadium.
“We’re halftime, so to speak, because there’s a parade at Champion Elysie this afternoon,” Nunes said.
“Only those participating in the parade will be allowed on-site. There is a maximum attendance of over 100,000 people, above that, nobody else will be allowed.
“There will also be a celebration tonight at Parc des Princess, and we will respond in the same measured but solid way if we block sacred roads, attack law enforcement, or cause further damage.”
Paris had deployed 5,400 officers in anticipation of celebration following the victory of PSG, Nunes said Friday.
