Veteran Florida State Assembly Joe Casero passed away late Friday, July 18th after suffering a massive heart attack at the beginning of the month.

The 73-year-old Democrat has represented Florida House District 90, a Palm Beach County area that includes Boynton Beach since 2018.

“I’m very sorry to say that Rep. Joe Casello passed away following a heart attack surrounded by his beloved family and girlfriends,” the House Democrat Caucus, Florida, said in a social media post that announced his death. “Family extends our sincere appreciation to everyone who provided love and support during this difficult time.”

Nikki Fried, chairman of the Florida Democratic Party, said he was “deeply overlooked.”

The private ceremony will be held in the family’s hometown of Massachusetts, and the public commemoration will be announced in the coming weeks, according to Caucus.

Casero was a firefighter in Worcester, Massachusetts for 33 years before moving to Palm Beach County. His first entry into politics was in 2013 when he became mayor of Boynton Beach. Last November, he was re-elected in the fourth term of the state legislature by a double-digit margin. He had filed documents to run for the Palm Beach County Commission in November 2026.

According to Florida law, Gov. Ron DeSantis must call a special election to fill Casero’s seat.

Casello discontinued life support on the morning of July 18th after being taken to a community hospital about two weeks ago after complaining of chest pain.

R-Delray Beach State Rep. Mike Caruso is a close friend and told the Palm Beach Post that he and his wife visited Casello for about 30 minutes on July 17th.

“He was very clear,” Caruso said. “I asked him if there was anything he could do for him. He said: “See if you can get a fire truck named after me.”

“My life has always met the needs of public services and my community,” Casero said in a statement released on July 17th, one day before his death. “As a firefighter for 33 years, serving as both an elected official for 13 years, was the greatest honor of my life.
