Virginia’s Firehook voluntarily recalls one of the artisan baked crackers, as the product may contain undeclared sesame seeds, a known allergen.
The affected product, also known as Firehook’s Classic Sea Salt Organic Cracker, was sold in retail stores in 11 states, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia.
The recall began on May 30th after the company discovered that “products containing sesame seeds” were placed in packages that did not reveal the presence of the ingredients.
The Alexandria, Virginia-based company issued a formal notice shared with the Food and Drug Administration on June 4th.
The error was the result of a “temporary breakdown” of the company’s production and packaging process, which caused the incorrect label to be applied to the product, according to a Firehook in a subsequent investigation in Virginia.
“People who are allergic or severely susceptible to sesame will carry the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions when consuming these products,” the company’s notice reads. However, no disease has been reported so far.
