Election Day is Tuesday, November 4th, and there’s only a little time left to register and see if you’re ready to vote.

If you tend to wait until the last minute to make sure your registration is up to date and ready, you may be in luck. More than 20 U.S. states allow same-day registration during early voting and on Election Day.

Voters in New York City, New Jersey, Virginia and California will vote on one mayor, two governors and redistricting measures, providing an early test of Democratic and Republican strategies ahead of next year’s midterm congressional elections.

States that allow same-day voter registration

Same-day registration is available in 23 states and Washington, DC. Most allow you to register on election day, but some have conditions, such as only applying to presidential elections or allowing you to register only by early voting.

Two states, Alaska and Rhode Island, only allow same-day registration to vote in the presidential and vice presidential elections.
