At least 13 people were injured when the car drove into a crowd outside a Spanish stadium, which hosts a soccer match between Crosstown rivals Major FC Barcelona and Espanyol, according to the local government.
Catalan police described the incident as an “accidental clash” with CNN on Thursday.
“The situation is under control and does not pose any risk to people within the sports facility,” police said in a separate statement on social media. Catalonia’s emergency services said in a post on X that 13 people are being treated for injuries.
“The injured people were being treated by emergency services and the driver of the vehicle has been arrested,” Catalan police wrote in a follow-up post soon. “There’s a big police presence in this area.”
Videos from Earth Media by CNN from Earth Media appear to show a white car running through the crowds of the park next to the facility.
The emergency service said in a post on X that nine people were “minorly injured” and the other four were in “serious” conditions.
FC Barcelona ultimately won the match 2-0 and became the Laliga champion in the 2024-25 season.
The game was separated by a red card for Espanyol defender Lendro Cabrera, who had elbows covered 17-year-old Barcelona Super Starr Lamin Yamal with his elbows within the final minutes of the match.
At the final moments of chaos, the stadium sprinklers were turned on when the Barcelona players celebrated the title.
The fierce rivalry between Barcelona and Espanyol dates back almost to a century and often intersects Spanish politics. FC Barcelona is a favourable team for Catalan nationalists, and Espanyol is often supported by people loyal to the Spanish nation.
