USA Today, issue has been resolved
After a record high earlier this year, retail egg prices have fallen after retail egg prices have fallen.
Average retail egg prices fell to $5.12 per dozen, down more than $1, down from its March peak, by $6.23, according to a report released June 3 by the USDA Economic Research Service.
As previously reported by USA Today, wholesale prices began to fall in mid-March. However, retail prices usually delay wholesale prices for a variety of reasons.
“Retail egg prices are affected by wholesale egg prices, but additional factors such as pricing strategies and contracts can mute the effects of short-term volatility. As a result, retail price movements tend to slow down changes in direction made by wholesale prices,” the USDA report states. “When wholesale prices skyrocketed, retailers sometimes and temporarily sold eggs. As wholesale prices retreat, retail prices drop and often continue to rise for a long time.”
The USDA said wholesale prices fell in March in March, lowering egg demand and lowering confirmations of new avian flu.
“By April, despite seasonal demand for eggs had declined and low stocks, the average monthly wholesale price fell to $3.74 per dozen, down from $8.20 in February,” the report said.
A final report from the US Department of Agriculture on May 30 listed the wholesale price of $2.52, a $2.52 average wholesale price for large loose white shells, down 40 cents from the previous week.
